"Shrift" is another word for confession, and all good Catholics have this "obligation," of course. The plan is actually quite clever, since Juliet would presumably be telling the truth. You see, a Roman Catholic traditionally has a final "Confession" immediately before marriage. Why this is, I have never understood. One might think it should be saved for later, when it was really necessary...
