The Catholic view toward suicide:

Catholics have always believed that the act of suicide is the "ultimate" sin, or the sin for which one could not be forgiven. They believed that an act of suicide was "usurping God's role," and that the sinner dies with the sin on his conscience, with no possible chance for forgiveness. Shakespeare seems to be reminding his audience that a person who takes his or her own life would not be issued a "Get out of Hell free" card.
